Departmental details for the University prospectus.

Established in 1986 as one of the founding departments of Pakistan Institute of Medical sciences, the department of urology has contributed immensely to the development of the specialty in the country.

Profile of the Faculty and attached departments:

The department is currently headed by Professor Dr.  Muhammad Naeem who is a brilliant surgeon, relentless teacher and a compassionate doctor. His areas of special interest are endourology, uro-oncologyand reconstructive urology. The department also has an Associate Professor, and an Assistant Professor who are experts in their fields and are involved in day to day running and teaching activities.

Components of the Department:

Out Patient Department: Open six days a week the OPD caters to over 150 patients from far flung areas of the country.

Operating Theater:  The department has a custom built operation theater and facilities for a range of endoscopic procedures.

Lithotripsy center: The lithotripsy center is equipped with the latest Extracorporeal Lithotripsy machine that is capable of treating patients with both radio opaque or radiolucent stones.

Minor O.T.: Adjacent to the lithotripsy department it utilized for minor and day car surgery like vascular access procedures for hemodialysis, percutaneous drainage, incision and drainage and urethral dilatations.

Renal Transplant Program: The department collaborates with the Organ Transplant Unit for renal transplants.

Teaching Programs:

The department currently has two training programs i.e. the MS Urology FCPS urology.

Achievements of Faculty/Department:

Headed by dedicated professionals and academicians the department has been the alma mater to a total of 53 Urologists since its inception. Of the 38 FCPS and 15 MS scholars a number now head the majority of Urology departments across Pakistan. The department has the honour of being the first to introduce a number of therapies in the country including but not limited to renal transplantation, percutaneous nephrolithotomy.

Future Plans:

Keeping up with the tradition of innovation and excellence the department envisions to introduce Laproscopic surgery, laser surgery and also procure aurodynamics lab. The department also has plans to introduce clinical fellowship after postgraduatuion in the fields of reconstructive urology and uro-oncology. PhD program is also under consideration.
