Department of Accident & Emergency

Department of Accident & Emergency started with the inception of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences. It was extended in 1994 and a large reception hall was added to the existing infrastructure which included reception, doctors examination room, emergency operation theatre, resuscitation rooms, observation ward both male & female consisting of 22 beds. It was run by the medical officers and postgraduate residents from different departments on rotation basis. The resuscitation rooms and operation theatre was well equipped.

At present the accident & emergency department is headed by Professor Imran Sikandar, in addition to his primary responsibility as head of the department of Orthopedics.

The department also has disaster management plans and has successfully managed major events like Ojhri Camp explosion, Flash floods, Sabaz Mandi blast, Egyptian Embassy blast etc.

Recently friends of PIMS have contributed high quality structure, wheel chairs and uniforms for the staff. There is also a plan to establish a major state of the art trauma & emergency center, which will be the only facility in the capital.

The department intends to start a crash-training programme to focus a high quality care and team approach. Advance Trauma Life Support (ATLS) is being organized. Special courses for the nurses and supporting staff are also due to start next month. The slogan of the department is "action with care - care in action".
