Prof Tariq Iqbal has designed and established a state-of-the-art Burn Care Center at PIMS which was inaugurated by the President Islamic Republic of Pakistan on December 6, 2007. This is the first of its kind in the public sector of Pakistan and rather South East Asia that is established in accordance with the latest International standards for the management of Acute Burn Care and long-term sequel. In last 14 years this center has emerged as the best facility in the country to treat all sorts of major burns and have managed more than 150,000 patients with recovery rate that is comparable to such centers of the developed world.

All treatments at this center are provided free of cost to all patients. This is the pioneer center in the country that introduced the latest management protocols for acute burn care including the transplantation of synthetic skin and usage of Bio-dressings, with the result that the patient?s recovery data of this center is comparable with those of developed world.

Burn victim?s mortality rate in Pakistan is beyond proportion when compared with other countries. For instance, in our country, Mortality rate of a major burn i.e. 40-50% body surface area is 86%, whereas it is less than 20% in developed world.

This center has introduced 1st time in the country many advanced techniques and materials including synthetic skin and biological dressings that are being practiced in the best centers of developed countries to manage acute burns.

Post-graduate Training Programmes

To start Postgraduate Training in Burns Specialty was a long awaited dream to continue the legacy of advanced Burn Care in the country. Since 2014, Prof. Tariq Iqbal, has introduced in the Centre, First Time in the Country, postgraduate teaching programs in Burns for doctors, recognized by Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) and Higher Education Commission (HEC). Currently, 08 fellows (MS Burns Surgery) are under training at this Centre. Following programs are currently running in BCC:

  • MS Burn Surgery Level III (6 Years)
  • Postgraduate Fellowship Level IV (2 Years)
These training programmes are offered under the patronage of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU). During a recent visit of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to BCC, the Expert Panel highly appreciated the academic environment of BCC and termed it an "Islands of Excellence" within the SZABMU.

Prof. Tariq Iqbal has over 30 years of clinical and administrative experience of serving federal government medical institutes. He received his basic medical education (MBBS) from the Rawalpindi Medical College (Punjab University, Pakistan) in 1989 and then qualified FCPS in General Surgery and Fellowship in Plastic Surgery, Fellowship (FRCS) from Royal College of Surgeons, Glasgow UK, and Fellowship (FACS) from the American College of Surgeons, USA.
Having a special interest in the treatment of burn patients he visited various international burns centers including Rode Kruis Burn Center Beverwijk Amsterdam, Netherlands, Euro Skin Bank of the Netherlands and Broomfield Hospital Burn Center London, University of Washington Burn Center at Harborview Medical Center, Seatle, USA for hands-on trainings.
He decided to dedicate his life to the difficult field of Burns Surgery. In 2003, he prepared the PC-1 (planning document) to establish a state-of-the-art Burn Care Centre at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences that was completed in July 2007 and was inaugurated by the President of Pakistan on December 6, 2007. This was the first of its kind in the public sector of Pakistan that was established in accordance with the international standards for the management of Acute Burn Care and long-term sequel.
Since 2014, he also succeeded in introducing, first time in the country, postgraduate teaching programmes in Burns Surgery for doctors, recognized by PMDC, i.e., 06 years MS Burns Surgery (Level III) and 02 years? Post-FCPS Fellowship programme in Burns Surgery (level-IV). Prof. Tariq also served as the Controller of Examinations (2017-21), Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University, Islamabad.
