Overview

The Department of Nephrology is a largest independent professorial unit for imparting training in the discipline of FCPS & MD Nephrology. Approved by the Pakistan Medical Commission and Recognized by College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan and affiliated with Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University. Staff consists of Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Senior Registrar, Medical Officers, Postgraduate Students in MD & FCPS, and House Officers Regular & Honorary.

Department started as a small unit having only 04 Haemodialysis machines back in 1986 that now has flourished into an independent unit 24 hours a day 07 days a week functional Haemodialysis unit comprising of 18 Haemodialysis machines including 03 separate Haemodialysis machines for Hepatitis B Positive patients and will installed 20 more will be installed by the mid of this year i.e. 2019.

Staff consists of Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Senior Registrar, Medical Officers, Postgraduate Students in MD & FCPS, and House Officers Regular & Honorary.

The Department consists of 42 bedded acute ward, 20 outpatients/emergency/Indoor hemodialysis machines for regular patients and 02 hemodialysis machines dedicated to Hepatitis B positive patients, 01 hemodialysis machine in Medical ICU and 01 hemodialysis machine in Covid-19 Isolation ward dedicated for Covid-19 positive indoor and outdoor patients. Other services include 6 days a week out patient clinics in general nephrology, transplant and hypertension, glomerulonephritis, diabetes, Vasculitis. 1000 patients per month attend these clinics; another 300 patients are seen as referral from emergency per month, other departments and outside institutions.

Every month, up to 300 patients are admitted with 70% new cases. Currently there are over 150 kidney failure patients registered receiving regular maintenance Haemodialysis twice a week with over 2100 dialysis sessions done in a month. There is an active kidney transplant programme. Innumerable other procedures such as peritoneal dialysis, diagnostic kidney biopsies, ultrasonic evaluation and temporary vascular access procedures are performed.

For postgraduate teaching and training programme we are proud of inducting candidates for FCPS and MD through out the country it has an active programme involving educational activities in the form of lectures, patient’s management, journal club, clinical research and participation at various academic activities locally and nationally.

09 of our postgraduate trainee have received FCPS fellowship degrees from College of Physicians and Surgeons and 15 MD degrees from Shaheed Zulfiqar Al Bhutto Medical University. The Department has hosted three very successful International Conferences in Nephrology under the auspices of Pakistan Society of Nephrology and International Society of Nephrology.
