Medical Oncology

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Overview

Oncology is the branch of medicine that specializes in the study, treatment, and management of cancer right from the diagnosis of cancer to all the different treatments of cancer and palliative care. A doctor who specializes in oncology is called an oncologist. A cancer patient is managed and treated by an oncologist. They diagnose cancer and then assign a stage depending on the severity of the disease. The treatment options are discussed and explored. If required, the patient is then referred to the care of an oncologist who specializes in particular cancer and its treatment. Most times the treatment involves oncologists from different specialties such as radiation, surgery and chemotherapy working together on treating and managing a patient.

Our team of doctors and specialists at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences – PIMS provide medical oncology services and treatments through specialized as well as multi-disciplinary teams as and when required to give the best possible treatment and cancer care services for each patient.

Outpatient Department

All oncology patients are clerked and assessed thoroughly and then are either admitted for further treatment or worked up. These patients are seen and managed without any pre-conditions or requisites. Patients suspected of suffering from a malignancy are also assessed and then directed or referred to the appropriate facility for further diagnostic tests or procedures. A breast cancer screening is also functioning alongside the routine OPD. This service is open to all persons during the OPD timings.

Chemotherapy Bay

This service was established to facilitate those patients not requiring admission but being referred for chemotherapy administration. This functions during OPD hours and is located in Medical Ward-7 so as to ensure availability of a doctor. A dedicated nurse is available to look after and administer chemotherapy. Blood and blood component transfusion services are also offered to patients suffering from pancytopenia/myelosuppression.

Inpatient Department

This consists of 18 beds; 09 female and 09 male beds. A daily teaching round is conducted by Consultant Oncologist. Once weekly - on Thursday - a joint clinical meeting with the Departments of Pulmonology/ICU, General Surgery, Gynecology, Radiology and Dermatology is held in Radiology Department PIMS. Case presentations and seminars are made in turn by these respective departments. Grand rounds are also presented by the Department of Oncology on their turn.
